As Spring Training progresses for the Atlanta Braves, several key position battles are heating up. With the regular season fast approaching, the Braves’ coaching staff faces tough decisions regarding the final spots on the bench.
The starting lineup is mostly set, but the competition for the remaining bench positions is fierce. This article delves into the ongoing battles and the potential candidates vying for a spot on the Braves’ Opening Day roster.
Atlanta Braves Bench Battle: Catcher Conundrum
The Braves’ catcher situation has become more complicated with the news of Sean Murphy’s cracked rib. Murphy’s recovery timeline may impact the decision on who will serve as the backup catcher.
The top prospect, Drake Baldwin, has impressed during Spring Training, hitting .444/.583/.586 with no strikeouts. Despite his performance, it remains a long shot for Baldwin to make the Opening Day roster.
Chadwick Tromp: The Favorite
Chadwick Tromp has been the presumed backup catcher for most of the offseason. Tromp, who is out of options, has youth on his side and seems to be the odds-on favorite to secure the spot.
However, veteran catchers Sandy Léon and Curt Casali are also in the mix. Léon has shown power with two home runs, while Casali brings experience from his time with the San Francisco Giants.

Outfield Options: Competition Heats Up
With Ronald Acuña Jr. temporarily out, the Braves need to fill the right-field position. Jarred Kelenic is considered a roster lock, but his remaining option means he could start the season in the minors if he struggles.
The four players vying for one or two outfield spots are Jake Marisnick, Conner Capel, Bryan De La Cruz, and Carlos D. Rodriguez.
Experience vs. Potential
Marisnick’s extensive MLB experience and defensive prowess make him a strong candidate. De La Cruz, despite recent MLB struggles, has been the presumed platoon partner with Kelenic.
Rodriguez, with limited MLB experience, seems like the longest shot, while Capel’s chances hinge on outperforming Kelenic, which seems unlikely given Kelenic’s solid start to Spring Training.
Infield Decisions: Defensive Needs
The infield battle centers around whether the Braves need a capable shortstop backup. Nick Allen, known for his defensive skills, appears to have the inside track. However, he has struggled at the plate and is out of options, posing a risk if exposed to waivers.
Christian Cairo, a Rule 5 draft pick, is another contender. If Cairo doesn’t make the roster, he must be offered back to Cleveland.
Utility Players: Versatility Matters
Eli White and Luke Williams are versatile players who can fill multiple positions. White has shown competence at second base but struggles at shortstop.
Williams, despite a poor Spring Training performance, has more MLB experience on the infield and outfield. The decision may come down to who can provide better infield coverage, especially at shortstop.
Final Bench Spots: The Favorites
As it stands, Tromp, White, and De La Cruz are the favorites for the final bench spots. The decision on the last spot could hinge on whether the Braves want to keep Nick Allen or Christian Cairo.
Williams, who is also out of options, could be a better fit for the last bench spot, given his experience in a similar role last season.
Other Contenders
Garrett Cooper is primarily a pinch-hitting option, and Eddy Alvarez is a two-time Olympic silver medalist. However, Cooper’s limited defensive versatility and Alvarez’s cold bat this spring make them less likely to secure a spot.
Charles Leblanc and prospect Nacho Alvarez Jr. are also in the mix but are expected to start the season in the minors.
