In an impressive display of skill and longevity, Justin Verlander, the 42-year-old pitching phenom, made his third start of the Cactus League for the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday afternoon.
Verlander, who has been a dominant force in Major League Baseball for over two decades, continues to defy age with his remarkable performance, allowing just one run over five innings. His contribution was pivotal in the Giants’ 5-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics.
This article delves into Verlander’s recent outing, his transition to the Giants, and the impact he has on the team’s young pitchers, as well as the latest roster changes for the Giants.
Justin Verlander’s Stellar Performance in the Cactus League
Justin Verlander, a seasoned veteran selected with the second overall pick of the 2004 MLB Draft, is entering his 22nd year in professional baseball.
Despite his age, Verlander shows no signs of slowing down. In his latest Cactus League start, he allowed just one run over five innings, giving up four hits, one walk, and one home run, while striking out four batters. This outing has helped him maintain an impressive 2.45 ERA this spring.
Verlander’s Transition to the Giants
After spending the majority of his career with the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, and New York Mets, Verlander is now experiencing his first taste of Cactus League play with the San Francisco Giants.
The Cactus League, with its complexes all within a 50-mile radius, offers a lighter travel schedule compared to the Grapefruit League, which is spread across Florida. Verlander has expressed his appreciation for this more convenient setup, noting that the younger players may not fully realize how fortunate they are.
“It’s been great,” Verlander said. “I think for travel, it’s incredible. I don’t think the young guys here that have to go on the road every day realize how good they have it here versus Florida. It can be pretty tough there in the Grapefruit League. No, it’s been nice. I’ve really enjoyed my time here.”

Mentoring the Next Generation
With his wife and daughter back in Florida, Verlander has had more time to spend at the Giants’ facilities in Scottsdale. This has allowed him to take on a mentoring role for the club’s young pitchers.
Verlander has made it clear that he is available and eager to share his wealth of knowledge with the up-and-coming talent on the team.
“I think it just kind of happens naturally,” Verlander said. “I’ve made it clear that I’m around, I’m available and want to talk. So, I get asked a lot of questions. I think it’s one of the blessings of being out here in Arizona and not having my family out here, is I spend a lot of time at the field. There’s really no rush for me to get home and spend the day with my daughter. And with my extra time, I spend it here and spend it with kids that aren’t much older than my daughter.”
Manager Bob Melvin’s Perspective
Giants manager Bob Melvin has been highly impressed with Verlander’s performance and his willingness to help the younger players.
Melvin appreciates Verlander’s preparedness and deep understanding of the game, which he believes are key factors in Verlander’s sustained success.
“He’s been all-in on helping those guys out, watching bullpens, having opinions,” Melvin said. “I mean, you look at the skillset and what he’s accomplished over his career. There’s a lot more to him. He’s completely prepared for each and every game. He knows the opponents well. He studies them well. So much [of] that goes into what has made him the pitcher that he is today.”
Impact on Young Pitchers
Verlander’s presence has been invaluable for the Giants’ young pitchers. His experience and insights offer a unique learning opportunity for them.
Verlander’s dedication to mentoring is evident in his interactions with the team, and his contributions extend beyond his performance on the mound.
Giants’ Roster Changes
In addition to Verlander’s standout performance, the Giants have made several roster changes. On Tuesday, the team reassigned six players to Minor League camp, continuing to downsize their roster as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Pitchers Reassigned
Among those reassigned were two left-handed pitchers, Antonio Jimenez and Helcris Olivárez, who were competing for a spot in the Giants’ bullpen.
Jimenez had a mixed performance, tossing a scoreless frame in his first appearance but struggling in his second outing against the Cubs. Melvin acknowledged that Jimenez may not have been given the best opportunities to showcase his abilities.
“In Jimenez’s case, maybe he didn’t perform great, but I’m not sure we gave him some good spots,” Melvin said. “I think he faced all right-handers. I’m not even sure he faced a left-hander, even though he has the weapons to get the righties out. He’s 23 years old. There’s a lot to like about him, we just don’t have enough innings right now for him.”
On the other hand, Olivarez impressed with his performance, striking out four in two innings of action without allowing any runs.
Melvin praised Olivarez’s ability to throw strikes and expressed optimism about his future potential.
Additional Reassignments
In addition to Jimenez and Olivarez, the Giants reassigned infielder Sergio Alcántara, right-hander Justin Garza, and catcher Adrián Sugastey to Minor League camp.
These moves leave the Giants with 44 players remaining in big league camp, 34 of whom are on the Giants’ 40-man roster. The other 10 are non-roster invites.
Looking Ahead
As the Giants continue their preparations for the upcoming season, Justin Verlander’s performance and mentorship will be crucial to their success.
His ability to defy age and maintain a high level of play serves as an inspiration to both his teammates and fans. With Verlander leading the way, the Giants are poised to make a strong push in the 2025 season.
